Seasonal Mulching

As popular as they are today in contemporary landscapes, mulches are not a new concept. For as long as trees have grown in forests, leaves and needles have fallen to the ground, matted together, and formed a protective layer over the soil.

Many different natural and synthetic types of mulch are available in today’s market. All mulches perform three basic functions:

  • Reduce the amount of water lost in soil
  • Suppress weeds in planting beds
  • Protect against temperature extremes

The use of mulch in landscape plantings provides additional benefits as well. Most types of mulch break the impact of rain, reducing soil erosion and preventing soil crusting, allowing the penetration of water into the soil.

Mulches improve soil structure. As they decompose, they provide organic matter, increasing aeration and moisture retention, creating better conditions for root and plant development.

Bark mulch that is managed in the landscape properly provide excellent value to the aesthetics and health of the landscape.

By Design provides the installation of quality bark mulches like pine and hemlock blends to many clients on an annual basis. The service enhances the landscape, and creates a beneficial environment for all trees, plants, and perennials.
